Lady Broncos Run Past the Lady Tigers
Lawrenceville, VA- Despite four players with double figures,
the Lady Tigers could not fight off the Lady Broncos of
Fayetteville State University.
With time running down in the second half, Lady Tigers were
one basket away from retaking the lead. After a great block
of a lay-up by center Keneil Rainey, SPC pushed the ball up
the court but were soon forced into a turnover the Lady
Broncos. Katrina Wright would then go on to foul Leticia
Dickson whom knocked down both of her free throws stretching
the FSU's lead to 71-68 with less than .20 seconds on the
clock. Following several failed attempts at the basket
the Lady Tigers fouled Dickson once again sending her to the
line to shoot a pair of free throws, making one of them and
giving the game its final score of 72-68.
Though not enough to overtake the Lady Broncos tonight,
the Lady Tigers displayed superior offense with four players
netting double figures. Senior Katrina Wright led all SPC
scorers with 16 points on 5 of 13 shooting with 3 rebounds
and 2 assist. Brittany Christian backed her up with 13
points on 9 of 10 shooting from the free throw
line. Tatiana Ellis and Gabrielle Johnson both contributed
10 points on the night.

"Lady Tigers Tame Lady
Panthers on Wright's Game Winning Shot"
The Lady Tigers battled the Lady
Panthers back and forth throughout the stretch of the game down
to its final seconds. With under ten seconds left in the game,
Union scored on a Samantha Traynham lay-up retaking the lead
from the Lady Tigers, making the score 63-62.
With Union's crowd roaring at the
thought of a ensuing victory, an immediate timeout was called
after Traynham's lay-up. The Lady Tigers go to the bench
and quickly think of a way to quiet the enthusiastic crowd. SPC
inbounds the ball and pushes it the length of the court. With
the time running down guard Juantale Cook dishes it off to a
slashing Katrina Wright whom turns the corner and her defender
and heads straight to the basket. As the clock ticks to one
second the shot is up by Wright, the ball kisses off the back
board, and then drops through the hoop ending the game with a
Saint Paul's win.
Katchona Johnson and Samantha
Traynham both posted double-double figures for their Lady
Panthers. Johnson scored 23 points along with 18 rebounds.
Traynham also scored to 23 points and added another
11 rebounds. The Lady Panthers dominated the glass, grabbing a
total of 54 rebounds, out rebounding SPC by a total of 17.
However, Union's efforts were not
enough to offset the streaky Lady Tigers. SPC's Tatiana
Ellis led all scorers posting a career high 28 points, making 9
of 17 field goals with 5 field goals coming from behind the
three point arc. Ellis was assisted in efforts by her teammate
Katrina Wright whom contributed another 13 points and also hit
the game winning basket.
The Lady Tigers improve to 6-5
Overall and 1-3 in the CIAA. SPC looks to add another win to
their record on Tuesday, January 15, 2008 as they take on the
Lady Broncos of Fayetteville State University. Gametime is
slated for 5:30pm at Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium, Lawrenceville,
VA.
