The Lady Tigers Win One and Lose One  in 2nd Annual UDC Classic

Washington, D.C.: November 23, 2008 – The Saint Paul's College Lady Tigers traveled to Washington D.C. this weekend to take part in the 2nd Annual University of the District of Columbia Women’s Basketball Classic.  Held on Saturday and Sunday the Lady Tigers competed against the Columbia Union College Lady Pioneers and the host UDC Lady Firebirds.  SPC posted a record of 1-1 in the tournament defeating Columbia Union on the first day of competition, 91- 46, but fell to the Lady Firebirds the next day, 76 – 69.

In their first outing of the classic, the Lady Tigers took control of Columbia Union right away.  Applying continuous pressure, the Lady Tigers forced the Lady Pioneers into 23 turnovers.  Junior guard Tatiana Ellis led all scorers in the game with 31 points on 12 of 16 field goals made.   Ellis also added four rebounds, one assist and two steals.  Junior guard Juantale Cook and senior guard Alicia Brown respectively added 14 and 13 points to the efforts of the Lady Tigers.

On Sunday the Lady Firebirds proved to be a worthy opponent for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Firebirds took control early in the game and made the Lady Tigers fight from behind.  SPC was not able to overcome the margin that UDC had put in front of them as they took their first loss of the season.   Freshman guard Allukesha Guy led the Lady Tigers in scoring with 18 points, five rebounds and one steal.  Tatiana Ellis trailed Guy closely adding 15 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal. Freshman guard DeAudra Brown respectively added 13 points.

Tatiana Ellis continued to have the hot hand for the Lady Tigers.  After scoring 44 points against Lincoln on Tuesday, she followed up with a 31 point game against Columbia Union on Saturday and scored 15 points against UDC on Sunday.  Ellis scored a total of 46 points in the Classic on 17 of 30 field goals made.  Ellis efforts earned her a total of eight rebounds, four assists, and four steals.  Ellis’ all around play earned her a seat on the 2nd Annual UDC Women’s Basketball Classic All Tournament Team.

Along with Ellis, teammate Juantale Cook also warranted 2nd Annual UDC Women’s Basketball Classic All Tournament Team honors.  Cook rallied with a total of 22 points in the Classic on 8 of 22 field goals made in addition to four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

The Lady Tigers return home on Tuesday, November 25, as they host the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State University. Game time is slated for 5:30 pm at Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium.
