The
Lady Tigers Win One and Lose One in
2nd Annual UDC
Classic

November 23, 2008 – The Saint Paul's College
Lady Tigers traveled to Washington D.C. this weekend to take
part in the 2nd Annual University of the District of
Columbia Women’s Basketball Classic. Held on Saturday and
Sunday the Lady Tigers competed against the Columbia Union
College Lady Pioneers and the host UDC Lady Firebirds. SPC
posted a record of 1-1 in the tournament defeating Columbia
Union on the first day of competition, 91- 46, but fell to the
Lady Firebirds the next day, 76 – 69.
In their first outing of the classic, the
Lady Tigers took control of Columbia Union right away.
Applying continuous pressure, the Lady Tigers forced the Lady
Pioneers into 23 turnovers. Junior guard Tatiana Ellis led
all scorers in the game with 31 points on 12 of 16 field goals
made. Ellis also added four rebounds, one assist and
two steals. Junior guard Juantale Cook and senior guard
Alicia Brown respectively added 14 and 13 points to the efforts
of the Lady Tigers.
On Sunday the Lady Firebirds proved to be
a worthy opponent for the Lady Tigers. The Lady Firebirds took
control early in the game and made the Lady Tigers fight from
behind. SPC was not able to overcome the margin that UDC
had put in front of them as they took their first loss of the
season. Freshman guard Allukesha Guy led the Lady
Tigers in scoring with 18 points, five rebounds and one steal.
Tatiana Ellis trailed Guy closely adding 15 points, four
rebounds, three assists and one steal. Freshman guard DeAudra
Brown respectively added 13 points.
Tatiana Ellis continued to have the hot
hand for the Lady Tigers. After scoring 44 points against Lincoln on Tuesday, she
followed up with a 31 point game against Columbia Union on
Saturday and scored 15 points against UDC on Sunday. Ellis
scored a total of 46 points in the Classic on 17 of 30 field
goals made. Ellis efforts earned her a total of eight
rebounds, four assists, and four steals. Ellis’ all around
play earned her a seat on the 2nd Annual UDC Women’s
Basketball Classic All Tournament Team.
Along with Ellis, teammate Juantale Cook also warranted 2nd
Annual UDC Women’s Basketball Classic All Tournament Team
honors. Cook rallied with a total of 22 points in the
Classic on 8 of 22 field goals made in addition to four
rebounds, two assists and two steals.
The Lady Tigers return home on Tuesday,
November 25, as they host the Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State
University. Game
time is slated for 5:30 pm at Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium.
