Tigers Score Upset Against Golden Bulls in Lawrenceville

Lawrenceville, Virginia - January 17, 2009 - The Saint Paul’s College Tigers hosted the Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University at Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium on Saturday, January 17.  Playing at a high pace, the Tigers’ tempo worked in their favor as they beat their western division rivals in overtime, 84–91.

James Dillard helped Johnson C. Smith establish more than a 10-point lead on the Tigers.  However, The Tigers were not discouraged even with the time winding down in the second half. The Tigers defensive pressure narrowed the Golden Bulls lead to three.

The second half began just as the first with the Golden Bulls in the lead, but it soon settled in favor of the Tigers. The score was even at 66 due to free throws made by Tiger forward Anthony Wynn.

The Tigers and the Golden Bulls trade baskets throughout the last four minutes of the game. With no time remaining on the clock, the Tigers and the Golden Bulls remain even at the end of the second half, 72-72.

In overtime, Saint Paul’s kicked it into higher gear. Sophomore guard George Leseur connected on three consecutive field goals from the three point range. The Tigers go on to win, 84-91.

Anthony Wynn led the Tigers in scoring with 24 points, 18 rebounds, one block and three steals.  George Leseur provided a great second half spark completing the game with 20 points, connecting on 4-of-6 three pointers.

Bruce Royal respectfully added 10 points and four assists.

This game possessed higher implications than just conference records; it was a matter of sibling rivalry for the coaches of both teams.  Coach Steve Joyner of JCSU and Tigers’ Coach Edward “Buck” Joyner are two brothers who look forward to this game every season. The win by Tigers on Saturday marks the first time that Coach Buck Joyner has beaten Coach Steve Joyner since the 1999-2000 season.

The Tigers return to action on Tuesday, January 20, 2009 when they host the Bears of Shaw University. Game time is slated for 7:30 pm at Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium.
