Rumble in the Jungle, the Lions versus the Tigers

“Barn Burner determines who is King of the Jungle”

Lawrenceville, VA ~ The Lions of Lincoln University traveled to Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium to take on the Tigers of Saint Paul’s College in what turned out to be one of the most exciting games of the season.  With the game in overtime and the adrenaline flowing, the Tigers excitingly overtake the Lions to win, 106-108 producing their first two game winning streak of the season.

The first half of this game had the makings of a blowout for the Tigers.  Going into half-time down 50-31, the Lions had a lot to discuss about what they were going to do in the second half.

The half time pep talk seemed to be productive for Lincoln, as they returned in the second half lessening the lead the Tigers held to three with two minutes left on the clock.  Dante Blanton-Holcombe (G, 6-3, Jr, Baltimore, MD) decided he would take over the game for the Lions.  Blanton-Holcombe scoring on a lay-up and then a 3-pointer tied the game up 94-94, at the end of regulation sending these jungle animals into overtime.

Having being outscored in the second half by the Lions, SPC would wake-up and respond in overtime.  With time winding down, the Lions and Tigers trade basket to determine the top scorer. With 1:17 left in the extra period, LU’s Emmanuel Kakulu sinks two free throws increasing the Lions lead to five.  Adrian Moffatt returns the favor for the Tigers by knocking down the first of three 3-pointers for the Tigers making the score, 102-104.

With Less than a minute left in the game Marcus Mitchell pulls the trigger on the second 3-pointer in this spectacular finale sending the Tigers up 105-104.  Blanton-Holcombe immediately responds with a lay-up converting on his 49th point of the game, leaving less than ten seconds on the clock.

Marcus Mitchell was not done with his damage on the Lions, with one second remaining on the clock, Mitchell lands the finishing move on Lincoln with a 3-pointer producing the games final score,108-106.

The Tigers had a scoring frenzy tonight placing six players in double figures.  Marcus Mitchell led SPC in scoring with 22 points and 7 rebounds, connecting on 6 of 10 field goals from behind the 3-point arc.  Adrian Moffatt (17 points and 12 rebounds) and Maurice Reevey ( 15 points and 10 rebounds) both displayed all-around performance tonight netting double-double figures.  Shahumaad Jones (16 points, 9 rebounds, 3 blocks), Bruce Royal (18 points and 9 assists), and Anthony Wynn (10 points and 9 rebounds) all played exceptionally well.

The Tigers will be back on the road as they travel to Elizabeth City State University on Saturday to take on the Vikings.  Game time is slated for 7:30 p.m.

Sophomore guard Ladaye Johnson scored a career-high 32 points for Lincoln University of Pennsylvania’s, 93-80, setback to visiting Saint Paul’s College in men’s basketball action Thursday night at Manuel Rivero Hall. Playing its first game in 26 days, Lincoln (1-12) sliced a 20-point second-half deficit to three points with under seven minutes remaining.

However, that effort was not enough to offset the balanced Tigers, who placed four players in double figures highlighted by Jack Browne’s 25 point, 10-rebound performance. Brown leads the CIAA in scoring and rebounding. Also notching double-doubles for Saint Paul’s College were Maurice Reevey (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Bruce Royal (16 points, 11 assists). BOWIE STATE TAKES ADVANTAGE OF THE TIGERS

BOWIE, MD ~  Making only their third home appearance in eight games, BSU’s Bulldogs took advantage of the opportunity defeating the undermanned Tigers of Saint Paul’s College 95-69.

Saint Paul’s was shown no mercy by the Bulldogs of Bowie State as they jumped out to a quick double figure (16-6) lead five minutes into the game.  Saint Paul’s went scoreless over a 4:37 stretch and trailed Bowie State 22-6 by the 12:31 mark of the first half.  Making matters worse, the Tigers did not reach double digits in scoring until after the midway point of the opening period.  By that time, the BSU lead had ballooned to 24-10 and eventually to 42-18 by the half. The Bulldogs held the Tigers to 32.1 percent shooting from the field, allowing SPC just nine field goals on 28 attempts.

Bowie State’s offensive storm continued in the second half with the Bulldogs hitting 19-of-34 from the field, including five out of 10 behind the arc.  Saint Paul’s showed tremendous improvement from the field as well in the final 20 minutes of play, sticking 19-of-35 attempts that included seven-of-14 behind the three-point line.

Jack Brown led St. Paul’s (1-3 / 0-2 in the CIAA and 0-1 in the East) with a game-high 28 points to go along with a team-high nine rebounds.  Shahumaad Jones, playing his first game of the season for St. Paul’s added 13 points in the loss.

TIGERS COULD NOT BE TAMED IN VICTORY OVER COLUMBIA UNION

“Browne’s third consecutive double double, spark Tigers first win”

Lawrenceville, VA ~ The Tigers of Saint Paul’s College (0-1 CIAA, 1-1 Overall) earn their first win of the season by defeating the Columbia Union College Pioneers (0-5 Overall), 106 – 69.

Just as the Tigers, the Pioneers marched into Taylor-Whitehead Gymnasium looking for their first win, but would end up nowhere near it.  Saint Paul’s jumped out to a great start with a 9-0 lead seizing all momentum away from Columbia Union and never relinquishing it.  By the twelve minute mark of the first half the Tigers had already increased their lead by double digits with the score showing 20-9.

With a halftime score of 51-25, the Tigers already smelled their opponent’s eminent defeat and began the second half with striking force.  SPC continued to rally increasing their lead to almost 40 points before the first ten minutes of the half was even complete.

With pre-season pick All-CIAA Jack Browne (32 points, 15 rebounds, 2 assist, 2 blocks, 1 steal) leading the way and earning his third consecutive double double of the season, the Tigers seemed untamable to the Pioneers.  Browne’s spectacular play excited the fans and sparked his teammates into playing at the level of confidence and skill in which he performed.  As a team the Tigers the shot 59.2% from field goal range and had 5 players score double figures.

Freshmen Maurice Reevey (20 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assist, 1 steal) and Adrian Moffatt (17 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 3 steals) were also standouts in this game posting their second consecutive double figures scoring efforts of the season.  Tonight the Tigers awoke from their slumber with fierce intentions as they pounced on the Columbia Union Pioneers to win their first game of the season.

Saint Paul’s looks to continue improving their record as they travel to Bowie State University to take on the Bulldogs.  Game time is slated for 4:00 p.m. Saturday, December 15, 2007.

Smith University's Brayboy Gymnasium, was hard fought by the Tigers but the Chiefs proved stronger throughout the stretch of the game.

Catawba led the Tigers by double-digits  in both halves of the game.  It was not until a little over three minutes left in the game when the Tigers pushed forward overtaking the Chiefs on a couple field goals being made, making the score 67-63 .  With the game tied at 71, Catawba rallied on to hit five consecutive free throws to recapture the lead and sustain it, winning the game with a final score of 76-71.  The Chiefs improved their record to 3-3 as the Tigers fall to 0-2.
