Tigers Fall to Wingate in Season Opener

PETERSBURG, VA – The Saint Paul’s College Tigers participated in their first contest of the 2008 season on Saturday playing host to the Bulldogs of Wingate University.  Wingate (1-0) defeated Saint Paul’s (0-1), 34-10.

The Tigers were the first to score in the game on a 38-yard field goal from Nelson Davalos with 6:56 left in the first quarter.

Later in the second quarter the Bulldogs seemed to come together as they begin to take over the game. With an all out team effort, Wingate went on to compile 361 total yards on offense. Three Wingate University quarterbacks either passed or rushed for a touchdown.  The Bulldogs defense held the Tigers to 142 total yards.

With 2:19 left in the fourth quarter, the Tigers were able to muster up another scoring drive when Micah Brown connected with Paul Banks in the corner of the end zone for the Tiger’s first touchdown of the season.  Brown was the fourth quarterback used in the game for Saint Paul’s. He would end the game completing 4-of-5 passes for 60 yards.

The Tigers used several different running backs in their attacks.  Jermaine Williams led all rushers with eight carries for 45-yards on the day.  Todd Shelton and Dante Chestnut both pitched in with 34-yards and 33-yards respectfully.

Paul Banks set the standard for the Tiger receivers for the game with his 34-yard touchdown reception. Emery Addison and Justin Bently added several noteworthy receptions.

Greg Toler led the Tiger defense with nine tackles and one interception. Brain Dennis and Cordero Hooper respectively added six and five tackles.

Saint Paul’s College returns to Cameron Field as they host CIAA newcomer Chowan University Saturday, September 6 at 1:30 p.m.  For more information on Tiger Football call (434) 848-1828.
