TIGERS OUT RUN PANTHERS

Albert Tinsley ran for two touchdowns against Virginia Union.

SOUTH HILL, VA – The Tigers used their running game to defeat the Panthers of Virginia Union 13-9 on Saturday afternoon.

In the first quarter of play, VUU’s Cheston Hickman rushed for 28 yards and gained offensive momentum for the Panthers.  However, the SPC defense held VUU to a 27-yard field goal by Jere Washington.  At halftime, the VUU Panthers went into the locker room with a 3 to 0 lead.

The Tigers used 10 plays to gain 55 yards at the beginning of the third quarter and with 4:36 left in the quarter, Saint Paul’s took a 7-3 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Albert Tinsley (Iron Station, NC) and PAT .

SPC moved the ball well in the game with a combination of passes and runs.  The Tigers rushed for 153 yard on the day and had 152 passing yards.  Saint Paul’s had 305 total yards to 186 for VUU. 

With 13:39 in the final quarter, Tinsley rushed for a 3-yard touchdown to give the Tigers a 13-3 advantage. 

VUU moved the ball down the field.  VUU quarterback Hickman connected with Joseph Jean-Pierre on a 25-yard TD that cut the Tigers’ lead to four.  Late in the fourth with seconds to go, Hickman dropped back to pass, looking to give the Panthers the lead and the game, Hickman was tackled for a loss and the ball was turned over on downs to the Tigers.

Alwan Lee (Miami, FL) was 14-21 for 152 yards passing for Saint Paul’s.  Tinsley rushed for 93 yards on 27 carries.
